Overview

NRDC is a leading international nonprofit environmental organization that has been marshaling science and the law to protect the environment and public health since 1970. Our more than 2 million members and activists reside in each of the United States and in the District of Columbia. NRDC employs over 500 scientists, lawyers, economists, media specialists, policy analysts, and administrators in its eight offices, including in China. Within each of the organization’s program areas – air, water, oceans, public health, climate change, energy, public land, international, urban, and environmental justice – NRDC’s experts pursue cutting-edge litigation, sophisticated lobbying, scientific research, and broad-reaching public education. For over 45 years, NRDC has played a central role in crafting, implementing, enforcing, and defending virtually all of the nation’s environmental laws.

RECENT NRDC VICTORIES

  • Advocating for laws in California and Maryland regulating the use of antibiotics in livestock production
  • Advancing clean energy and climate change projects in India
  • Safeguarding the people of Flint, Michigan from continued exposure to lead in drinking water
  • Challenging the illegal withdrawal of a federal regulation relating to mercury discharges

Responsibilities

NRDC’s summer legal interns may participate in writing briefs, drafting complaints, preparing legal analyses, obtaining affidavits, investigating violations of environmental laws, developing policy advocacy campaigns, and drafting white papers and comments for submission to Congressional committees and administrative agencies. NRDC hires passionate students who possess the intelligence, skill, self-confidence, and maturity to take on substantial responsibility. Our interns play an active role on the frontlines of the environmental movement. Over the course of a summer, an NRDC intern will typically work on a variety of projects and amass experience that he or she could not obtain anywhere else.

NRDC encourages successful applicants to secure funding from scholarships or their law schools, but such funding is not a factor in selecting interns. NRDC will supplement outside funding to ensure successful applicants receive at least $6,000 for the 10-week summer internship.
