The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is one of the nation’s most effective environmental action organizations. We use law, science, and the support of some 2.4 million members and activists to protect human health and the environment which supports it, as well as the planet’s wildlife and wild places.  Founded in 1970, NRDC staff helped write some of America’s bedrock environmental laws. Today, our staff of nearly 600 passionate environmental advocates – including lawyers, scientists, economists, policy and communications experts, the development team and others – work to protect and create environmental progress at home and abroad from offices in New York; Washington, DC; Chicago; Los Angeles; San Francisco; Bozeman, Montana; and Beijing.


Under the direction of the Director, Planned Giving, the Gift Planning Officer is the primary point person who corresponds with and cultivates mid-to-high tier donors/prospects to secure bequest gift intentions and life-income gifts in the Northern California Region.


  • Identify and research gift planning prospects; work as a primary contact for prospects
  • Maintain relationships with current gift planning donors
  • Cultivate prospects and current gift planning donors through face to face visits, phone calls, written correspondence, program updates, and donor events
  • Create proposals and responses to inquiries from donors regarding planned giving vehicles
  • Work with major gift staff to identify gift planning prospects in major gift portfolio and giving clubs
  • Collaborate with Director and others on developing, testing and analyzing new and current marketing strategies
  • Participate actively in discussion of Gift Planning’s goals, development of strategies, and work plan



  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Strong communication skills
  • 5+ years of experience in gift planning, development or estate planning law
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Willingness and ability to travel to meet with donors and prospects
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects
  • Excels working independently and with a close team
  • Is a “Self-Starter”
  • Organizational abilities
  • Familiarity with financial, legal, and investment topics relating to planned giving and ability to communicate those topics in plain, everyday language
  • Strong environmental or public policy interest
  • Commitment to pursuing a career in planned giving
  • Knowledge of planned giving databases
