Overview

This internship will focus on municipal finance and how we pay for essential infrastructure. This work fits in with NRDC’s Center for Market Innovation’s (CMI’s) work to help foster and implement global financial investments, to help maximize NRDC’s effectiveness in promoting healthy and sustainable communities.

Harnessing the power of markets is vital to achieving the environmental, social, and economic results needed for people to thrive. To catalyze widespread system change, CMI focuses on driving investment in multi-benefit infrastructure, clean energy, and sustainable food. As cities, states and other local jurisdictions look to upgrade their energy systems and infrastructure more broadly, they need to consider environmental, social and economic benefits and costs—and figure out how to pay for it.  Many investors are interested in investing in new solutions, but good, investible projects need to be created to meet their criteria.  Similarly, cities and other local governments need to create infrastructure in new ways to meet their critical needs for citizens, including as storms worsen under climate change.  This internship will focus on ways both sides (investors and local governments) and move these issues forward, and consider equity issues such as affordable housing, unequal effects of climate change or jobs for local residents.
