    The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation's most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things.   NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations; our water enforcement cases played a major role shaping current water policy throughout the country. Today, our staff of more than 500 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy and communications experts, and others, work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Bozeman, Montana and Beijing.

     

    Position Summary: 

    Our Human Resources team is committed to nurturing a work environment where our people thrive and work together to achieve our mission.  We are looking for a talented and motivated intern to join our team and work with the Benefits function.   This position could be based in NY and reports to the Benefits Manager.  The position starts in the Summer of 2018.  

     

    This internship is designed to be both educational and practical. In this position, the intern will learn how to take skills she or he may have acquired in school, and apply them in a professional setting.  He or she will gain a better understanding of the role that Human Resources can play in a non-for-profit setting, and be better prepared to work in the arena of Human Resources.

     

    This is a paid Internship, requires a minimum work schedule of five (5) days a week and offers flexible hours.

     

    The HR Benefits Intern will directly assist on a wide range of projects related to Benefits and will quickly learn about the different benefits plans offered at NRDC.

    Responsibilities

    • Develop an Employee Benefits Intranet site from inception to execution; research and develop new ways to showcase benefits information to promote employee engagement
    • Review and update all benefits publications to ensure they are relevant and current
    • Identify and map out process steps for various benefits activities
    • Audit, review, organize and catalog benefits materials located on the HR drive and Dropbox
    • Review and reorganize contents of  benefits file cabinets; scan old documents and create electronic files as appropriate
    • Other duties to support HR activities, as assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Current enrollment in a Bachelors degree program with a graduation date of December 2018 or May 2019
    • Must have an interest and aptitude to work in Human Resources, or not-for-profit management/administrative fields;
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Human Resources Management, or Communications preferred;  practical experience or coursework in Communications would be desired.
    • Must have strong grades (3.0 or better), analytical, writing, research skills as well as the confidence and maturity to assume serious responsibility. 
    • Strong editing skills to develop and/or update benefits materials (such as manuals and brochures).
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office and internet applications, advanced skills in Excel.  Strong knowledge of Dropbox and Acrobat.
    • Know when and how to ask for assistance to keep the project moving forward.
    • Maintain a high level of discretion while working with sensitive information.
    • Ability to prioritize and focus on assigned tasks, working both independently and as a member of a team.
    • Excellent communications skills and solutions, client service-oriented approach with an emphasis on creativity and diligence.
