  • Overview

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation's most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations; our water enforcement cases played a major role shaping current water policy throughout the country. Today, our staff of more than 500 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy and communications experts, and others, work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Bozeman, Montana and Beijing.

    Position Summary:

NRDC is looking for a 2-year Fellow with technical and/or engineering expertise to join our Climate & Clean Energy and International teams in Washington, DC. The Fellow will support NRDC’s domestic and international efforts to phase down the climate-damaging super-pollutants called hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). The ideal candidate will be familiar with refrigerants, refrigerant-using technologies such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR), and have strong interest in clean air policy, energy efficiency, and environmental advocacy. The Fellow will work cross-functionally with a top team of lawyers, engineers, analysts and advocates to support HFC- and energy efficiency-related work with U.S. states, the federal government, India, Chile, and the Montreal Protocol.

    • Provide technical expertise in support of NRDC’s efforts to phase down HFCs while increasing the energy efficiency of cooling appliances
    • Deliver analytical and program-design support to NRDC’s federal and state advocacy teams, primarily in the adoption of HFC reduction regulations and incentives by priority states
    • Develop a roadmap for additional state-level actions to reduce the climate impacts of cooling and explore next-generation technologies
    • Work with industry trade groups to promote state and local adoption of safety standards and building codes that allow use of flammable HFC alternatives
    • Promote adoption and implementation of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol by working in key countries, including the United States, India, and Chile
    • Work with NRDC’s international partner organizations on analyses and publications

    • Ph.D., M.S., or B.S. degree in a science, engineering, or other quantitative field with interest in climate policy development, analysis, and advocacy
    • 1-3 years of relevant experience developing and demonstrating key knowledge and skills:
      • Ability to analyze complex, multi-dimensional problems and make actionable recommendations
      • Ability to review, distill and summarize scientific and technical research for both technical and non-technical audiences
      • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple work streams
    • Excellent verbal communication, strong writing, and confident presentation skills
    • Diplomacy and relationship-building skills to interact with peers in government, other non-profits, and the business community
    • Experience working on climate, clean energy or clean air policies
    • Willingness to travel on occasion
