    The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation's most effective environmental action organization. Today, our staff of more than 500 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy and communications experts, and others, work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Bozeman, Montana and Beijing.

     

    Position Summary

     

    NRDC is seeking an experienced intern for our Sustainable Operations team housed within our Facilities department. The intern will work with the Sustainable Operations team to help with sustainable construction and operations across numerous offices. Tasks may relate to green building certification (Living Building Challenge, WELL, etc), refinement and tracking of operations procedures, and construction project coordination. The intern will work with the Sustainability Manager, Construction Manager, and Facilities Managers in all offices in addition to the Facilities & Workplace Wellness Manager in Chicago.

     

    The internship is for Fall/Winter 2018 through Spring 2019, for up to 35 hours a week between 9 am to 5 pm. Start and end dates and other scheduling details are negotiable.

     

    This position is based in Chicago.

    Responsibilities

    • Assist with coordination and documentation of green building certifications, such as Living Building Challenge and the WELL Building Standard
    • Support wellness initiatives within institutional construction projects and established workplace operations
    • Assist in reviewing and editing internal reports and plans
    • Support various projects related to construction and operations, including workplace updates, waste reduction, procurement, etc.
    • Research benchmarks and best practices as needed
    • Perform various administrative, coordination, and other tasks

    Qualifications

    • Excellent communications skills (both written and verbal)
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills; attention to detail
    • Solid knowledge of sustainability strategies and green building certifications
    • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and be proactive
    • Creative thinker and strategic problem solver
    • Excellent analytical skills
    • Ability to prioritize tasks and handle numerous assignments simultaneously, working both independently and as a member of a team
    • Current enrollment in or recent graduate of a master’s degree program focused on sustainability, sustainability management, architecture, engineering or similar preferred. (Graduation date between December 2018 and December 2019 preferred, if applicable.)
    • Bachelor’s degree in sustainability, architecture, engineering/energy, construction management, design, communication or similar a plus
