Overview

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is seeking a full-time junior analyst (consultant) to support research focusing on the reduction of excess coal-fired power capacity, to be based in NRDC’s Beijing office with an initial contract period of 12 months.

NRDC's Beijing Representative Office is registered under the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau and supervised by the State Forestry and Grassland Administration of China.

 

Position Summary:

 

The Junior Analyst will be responsible for supporting an NRDC project focused on reducing outdated and excess coal-fired power capacity in China in order to meet environmental protection and climate change targets. The research will focus on bottom-up analysis of coal fired capacity in order to develop policy pathways and mechanisms for the efficient, safe, green and lower carbon development of China’s coal-fired power sector. The junior analyst will support the project analyst in research, project management and implementation, and coordination with Chinese partners.

Responsibilities

  • Support the project analyst and Chinese partners at the national and provincial level to research short, medium, and long term targets, pathways, market mechanisms and policy measures for reducing the capacity of China’s coal-fired power plants.
  • Conduct research on environmental, energy, ecology and other standards for decommissioning backward capacity, as well as capacity reduction pathways appropriate for each region.
  • Undertake research trips, organize meetings and workshops, and do other related administrative work as required by the project.
  • Assist with project administration and reporting.
  • Work with colleagues to advance project research and communications.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or above, with 2 or more years relevant work experience in energy and/or environmental fields.
  • Strong research, writing, and speaking skills in both Chinese and English.
  • Some knowledge of China’s clean energy development, electricity market, and climate change policies, as well as the ability to conduct in-depth data and policy analyses.
  • Strong interpersonal and cooperative skills, as well as the ability to work well with government representatives, research institutions, universities, companies, and other NGO partners.
  • Ability to efficiently and independently perform various tasks in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Must be responsible, pay close attention to detail, and work with efficiency and accuracy.
