Overview

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation's most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things.   NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations; our water enforcement cases played a major role shaping current water policy throughout the country. Today, our staff of more than 500 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy and communications experts, and others, work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Bozeman, Montana and Beijing.

Position Summary:

NRDC is seeking an Environmental Health Intern to work with the Health and Food team in our San Francisco office. This position is a full-time, paid, 12-week internship.

The NRDC Health and Food Program’s staff of scientists, attorneys and policy advocates works on a variety of projects related to human health, food, and the environment. Some of our current priorities include reducing exposure to toxic chemicals in consumer products and food; eliminating exposure to the most toxic pesticides; and improving drinking water quality. We will have a variety of potential summer projects related to these issues and others, and we seek to tailor the summer internship experience to topics that are of mutual interest to us and the student.

We are looking for a student who is interested in learning about the scientific side of environmental activism, and who is flexible and excited about participating in a variety of projects with an interdisciplinary team. The internship generally includes a combination of literature reviews, data analysis, and production of written materials summarizing scientific information in technical or lay language. The intern generally has the opportunity to participate in lobbying in Sacramento, regulatory hearings, press events, community meetings, and field investigations.

The summer project will be tailored to the intern’s interests and abilities and may include one of the following issue areas:

  • Drinking Water: Research and analysis of drinking water contaminants in California with a focus on lead and PFAS chemicals.
  • Pesticides: Research and analysis of health threats from pesticide use in California with a focus on organophosphate chemicals
  • Toxics in Products: Assist with research on toxic chemicals in consumer products and building materials to support petitions, campaigns, and/or legislation (i.e. flame retardants, phthalates, PFAS etc.).
  • Chemical Policy: Research on policy issues and priority chemicals related to the California Safer Consumer Products Program
