The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation's most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things.   NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations; our water enforcement cases played a major role shaping current water policy throughout the country. Today, our staff of more than 500 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy and communications experts, and others, work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Bozeman, Montana and Beijing.


Position Summary:


NRDC is seeking a City Strategy and Engagement Intern to work with the American Cities Climate Challenge team in our New York City office.  This will be a full time position for ten (10) weeks during the summer of 2020. This will be a paid position with a stipend.


  • Draft public-facing resources in partnership with city and Challenge staff such as factsheets, reports, blog posts, and social media and website content around buildings and transportation policies and programs
  • Conduct research on a wide range of topics including utility regulations, real estate, mobility, transit, EVs, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and equity in the context of local city policy and programs.
  • Support the Challenge’s effort to integrate equity into local efforts
  • Directly support three City Strategists in their work with eleven (11) cities in the Climate Challenge on the east coast and mid-west to pursue the Climate Challenge goals
  • Potential to attend coalition and stakeholder meetings in east coast or mid-west cities.


  • Superior research, data synthesis, and analysis skills;
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrated interest in urban sustainability, subnational climate change commitments, environment, energy, buildings, and/or equity issues is a plus.
  • Experience in communicating scientific and/or technical information (oral and/or written) to non-technical audiences and/or have experience and knowledge of building energy efficiency, renewable energy, and/or transportation policies and programs.
