The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations. Today, our staff of more than 700 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy advocates, communications experts, and others work across the United States and internationally from our offices in New York; Washington, D.C.; Chicago; Santa Monica; San Francisco; Bozeman, Montana; and Beijing.


Position Summary:


NRDC is seeking a Finance Manager, Financial Planning and Analysis to work with the Accounting and Finance team in our New York office. 


The Financial Planning and Analysis Team is part of the Accounting and Finance Department, which reports to the Chief Financial Officer.  The team is responsible for i) the development of annual budgets and multi-year forecasts to support strategic decision making and resource allocation across the organization and ii) the enhancement of NRDC’s existing financial management framework, processes, and tools to meet the organization’s evolving needs. In addition, the team provides ongoing reporting and analysis of NRDC’s operating results to the Executive team and the Board of Trustees, and monitors and manages budget variances, liquidity position, and cash flows.


In addition to financial management functional expertise, the ideal candidate should have large-scale change management experience, a continuous improvement mindset, and a stakeholder engagement, solution-driven orientation to help drive NRDC’s increasing focus on more strategic, data-driven decision-making, risk management and predictive analysis and the alignment of resource allocation with strategic priorities.


The Finance Manager will report to the Director of Financial Planning and Analysis.  Key responsibilities include:

  • Accurately manage the P&L and budget (quarterly and monthly) and be able to communicate the organization's financial health.
  • Perform variance analyses to explain differences between forecast and actuals as they materialize throughout the fiscal year.
  • Consolidate financial results and analyses on an ongoing basis to produce actionable insights for senior leadership. Conduct various sensitivity and scenario analyses as required.
  • Help develop long-range institutional financial forecasts and cash flow projections in the context of the macro environment, fundraising trends, and the organization’s operating performance. Identify trends and corrective actions as needed.
  • Develop and present variety of financial reports and presentations for Board Members, CFO, CEO, and Executive Team members.
  • Help execute the entire annual budgeting and forecasting process throughout the fiscal year. Manage the budget calendar, develop timelines, track deliverables, coordinate presentation materials, and communicate and answer questions from various stakeholders regarding financial planning events.
  • Help drive the strategic transformation of the finance function by designing and implementing enhanced processes and automated workflows, in partnership with Accounting, Program Finance Management, Development and Substantive Advocacy teams.
  • Supervise 1-2 junior resources on the FP&A team to complete deliverables, manage day-to-day responsibilities, motivate and develop the team.


  • The Finance Manager must demonstrate a strong understanding of the Financial Planning & Analysis function, a big-picture orientation when approaching financial analysis, and experience in managing end-to-end budgeting and forecasting cycles.
  • The Finance Manager must also have experience with change management and stakeholder engagement, including the development of new workflows, procedures and processes across multiple functions, and the adoption of visualization tools for key analytics.
  • An individual must demonstrate each of the competencies listed below to successfully perform the responsibilities of this position.

    • Must possess a "can do" attitude and be willing to engage in all levels of "hands on" activities in order to ensure project completion within assigned deadlines.
    • Self-directed with the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, direct junior resources, and complete assignments within established time frames.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance or related field or equivalent relevant experience working in similar FP&A or Budget role.
  • Non-profit experience a plus but not required.
  • Minimum of seven plus (7+) years’ progressive experience in budget and finance analysis.
  • Mastery of excel skills to generate scenario modelling and predictive analyses.
  • Skilled in Word, PowerPoint. Working knowledge of the Adaptive and Great Plains software is desirable.

Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and commensurate with skills and experience.  Job grade for this role is Guides 3 with a salary ranging from $130,000 to $150,000.  Internal equity considerations and the average salary of the peer range will be reviewed before making a final offer.
