The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations. Today, our staff of more than 700 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy advocates, communications experts, and others work across the United States and internationally from our offices in New York; Washington, D.C.; Chicago; Santa Monica; San Francisco; Bozeman, Montana; and Beijing.


Position Summary


NRDC is seeking a Western Digital Campaign Manager to work with the Communications department in our Santa Monica or San Francisco office.


NRDC’s top priority is tackling the global climate crisis.  As part of this work, NRDC is increasingly focused on winning key environmental fights in cities, states, and regions around the United States. This position will work with other regional policy, advocacy, and communications teams alongside outside partners to develop and execute campaigns that recruit and engage audiences while helping to achieve our local policy objectives, and support our overall national advocacy goals.


This position will be responsible for planning and executing digital advocacy and engagement campaigns on local and regional issues. The campaigns will use a broad suite of digital tools and tactics, including email action alerts and petitions, social media content, advertising, offline advocacy, and new audience recruitment strategies that leverage a variety of communications channels with a focus on priority states where NRDC is working.


Ideal candidates should have experience working on advocacy and engagement campaigns at the local, state and/or national levels, and have strong writing skills, including writing for digital channels like email and social media. Some political or field organizing experience is a plus.


The position reports to the Regional Campaign Director and will coordinate with other regional digital campaigners and campaign staff inside and outside the Communications department, and with similar regional teams across the country. The position will also work with the NRDC Action Fund on grassroots lobbying and electoral campaigns. While NRDC is working remotely due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will prioritize candidates who can work in our Santa Monica or San Francisco office when they re-open. Candidates must have an ability to travel when travel resumes.


  • Work within NRDC’s Communications team and Center for Policy Advocacy to develop and execute integrated, multi-channel digital campaign plans in support of local, state, and regional policy issues in priority states and cities.
  • Develop strategies to increase and diversify NRDC’s audience and engagement metrics, through innovative campaign tactics.
  • Write and edit campaign plans, email action alerts, social media copy, SMS alerts, digital ad and graphics copy, creative briefs, video scripts, and more.
  • Work with colleagues to develop and execute strategies for promotion and awareness of NRDC’s brand, priority issues, major reports, and other public education and engagement opportunities related to regional campaigns.
  • Expand NRDC’s thought leadership by helping to promote local NRDC experts.
  • Work with the Regional Campaign Director and the Editorial, Content, and Multimedia teams to provide strategic social media guidance and project management support for regional and state-based advocacy campaigns, including project intake, content creation, scheduling, launch/execution, and quality control.
  • Assist in executing paid and earned lead generation strategies (email, SMS, etc.) in western states, including online advertising, list chaperoning, email list appends, and organic cross-marketing tactics.
  • Work with the Advertising and Social teams to support the planning and execution of paid social media strategies, including identifying target audiences, drafting social post copy, and working with the Multimedia team on creative assets, such as videos and graphics.
  • Respond to audience and follower inquiries from local activists and supporters as needed.
  • Create and present compelling case studies detailing our approach, goals, metrics, outcomes and learnings for campaigns.
  • Represent NRDC at local on-the-ground events and produce live social media coverage of offline events related to regional campaigns.
  • Willingness to travel, cover some weekends and holidays as needed.


  • Applicants should have at least 3-5 years’ professional experience in organizing/campaigning, digital advocacy, social media and engagement roles, preferably at a political campaign, nimble nonprofit, or advocacy organization.
  • Experience in organizing/campaigning in California and familiarity with the California political landscape is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent writing skills with a knack for distilling stories into short, compelling copy for a digital audience.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to coordinate well with field staff, local activists, partners, allies, etc.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple projects, set priorities, organize time, and identify resources as needed.
  • Working knowledge of eCRMs and other digital advocacy tools (Action Kit, Springboard, Luminate Online, Salsa, Engaging Networks, Marketing Cloud, ThruText, Mobile Commons, etc.) and their technical capabilities as they relate to digital strategy and campaign planning is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of social media tools (Sprout Social, Dash Hudson, Bitly, etc.) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with creating and launching geo-targeted and paid social media campaigns.
  • Experience organizing and managing live online events.
  • Familiarity with the political atmosphere and community dynamics within the region.
  • Passion for environmental justice issues and ability to work thoughtfully and respectfully with local partners.
  • Strong collaborative spirit.
  • Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations.

We offer competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. For this position, the salary is $75,000 to $90,000.


Since March 2020, NRDC’s offices have been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You will be associated with one of our offices, but until circumstances allow us to re-open, we will continue to support NRDCers with remote working arrangements.
