NRDC is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our people helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act and many of the implementing regulations. NRDC is seeking a Writer, Editorial to work with the Communications Department in our New York City office. 

Position Summary 

The Writer, Editorial will report to the Senior Editor and will be responsible for generating ideas for and writing NRDC.org explainer, news and feature content across science, health, and environmental issue areas and several distribution channels. This role will leverage their experience crafting thoughtful, engaging content for digital audiences (including consumers, students, and environmental activists) to reach and retain diverse readers across different platforms, thereby increasing awareness and understanding of NRDC’s issues to advance NRDC’s audience, policy, and advocacy goals. 

Responsibilities

  • Pitch, research, report and write content for various story verticals on NRDC.org, including scientific explainers and policy primers, day-two news stories, service journalism pieces, Q&As, and other columns.  
  • Harness SEO recommendations and analytics data to maximize the potential impact and reach of stories. 
  • Identify opportunities for and building infographic content (such as charts and tables) using Datawrapper and collaborate with multimedia team on scriptwriting for videos and other visual materials for editorial packages.  
  • Pitch ideas for converting editorial into social content, and help to produce such content, such as explainer carousels and quizzes. 
  • Write for occasional partnership opportunities, such as influencer video scripts. 
  • Draft Google Grant ad copy for select editorial content.  
  • Write select products for NRDC members, such as the Annual Report. 

The above list of duties is not comprehensive but generally demonstrates the types of matters under this position’s responsibility. Other duties may be assigned. 

Qualifications

Minimum Education & Experience:   

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, English or Communications 
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience writing engaging digital editorial and/or branded content, in the environmental, social justice, science, and/or health and wellness space. 
  • And/or equivalent education or experience

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  
  • Strong communication skills, a shrewd eye for compelling stories, and the ability to place story topics into broader context and/or trending conversations.  
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects at one time and meet crucial deadlines.  
  • Experience tailoring a brand’s or organization’s voice to connect with multiple audiences.  
  • Experience with interviewing experts in technical fields and translating scientific reports and policy nuance into accessible, accurate prose.  
  • A collaborative, creative spirit.  
  • Strong organizational skills, proactive orientation, and ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment.   
  • Excellent organizational skills and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to work with a broad range of people on different projects.  
  • Competence with and commitment to diversity and inclusion; ability to be an effective partner with diverse colleagues, leaders and partners. 
  • Ability to travel to NRDC U.S. based offices, approximately 10-15% annually

We offer competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. Internal equity will be reviewed and considered to determine a final offer. For this position, the salary range is $85,000 to $93,500 

 

Our offices are open and we are operating in a hybrid model. We offer NRDCers flexibility, and we ask them to come into the office and spend meaningful time there in collaboration with their colleagues. We call this purposeful presence.
