NRDC is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. NRDC is seeking a Senior Director, Total Rewards & Labor Relations to work with the Human Resources team in our New York or other NRDC offices. 

 
Position Summary 
NRDC is seeking a Senior Director, Total Rewards for immediate hire. The Senior Director will  lead our total rewards strategy; building on and evolving our current total rewards philosophy and programs for our global team with hubs in Bozeman, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, District of Columbia, Beijing, and New Delhi. You will play a critical role in building and implementing our Total Rewards philosophy and strategy across the organization, enhancing the client experience, building a great place to work, and providing leadership on compensation and benefits to ensure competitiveness within the industry. You will be a key member of the Human Resources leadership team responsible for reviewing programs, administering them, suggesting modifications, and ensuring achievement of organizational goals and objectives. You will ensure legal compliance, cost effectiveness, and that all programs have the desired impact for our employees. 

 

The Senior Director will supervise and work in coordination with the existing compensation, benefits, and compliance to execute an impactful strategy that attracts, motivates, and retains the very best talent, informs policy and processes, while being fully aligned with NRDC’s strategic priorities, value proposition, and culture. 

 

This position reports to the Managing Director, Human Resources. 

Responsibilities

  • Lead the strategy, design, and execution of NRDC’s total rewards philosophy and programs to attract and retain the best talent, ensure fairness and compliance, while balancing cost effectiveness and business objectives. 
  • Continuously review, benchmark, and analyze our Total Rewards programs and recommend changes when necessary to ensure alignment to business strategy. 
  • Develops a comprehensive and effective communication strategy for all Total Rewards programs to educate current employees and attract and retain talent. 
  • Lead, manage, and develop our compensation and benefits team and help build capability within the broader HR team. 
  • Oversee negotiations with benefit plan providers, vendors, auditors, and consultants for services, premiums and plan administration. 
  • Oversee plan audits and preparation and submission of government required reports. 
  • Oversee development and management of annual compensation programs, including salary and merit increases, equity and benchmarking reviews, and promotions. 
  • Collaborate with and provide advice to the HR team and relevant clients to develop and execute local compensation solutions to meet the needs of daily operations. Advise on pay decisions, policy and guideline interpretations, and job evaluations. 
  • Strategic oversight of the executive compensation function and preparation for board level discussions and recommendations on program design. 
  • Develop and coordinate management, reporting and metrics of all total compensation programs to present a holistic view for Board and Executive Leadership Team. 
  • Owns the development, implementation, review, and updating of HR policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with legal requirements, in partnership with the Office of General Counsel 
  • Manages on-going compliance efforts and audit activities.  

Qualifications

  • Commitment to NRDC’s mission and values. 
  • 10+ years of diverse, global Total Rewards experience. Subject matter expertise and recent work experience with Total Rewards statement creation and compensation equity analysis, strongly desired. 
  • Progressive leadership and management experience in Total Comp design, full life-cycle compensation planning & execution, implementation, budget & merit planning, salary survey management and selection, and partnering across all levels of the organization. 
  • Experience with international compensation and benefit design, including expatriate programs, and a solid understanding of the financial, legal and tax implications of the various global compensation and benefits alternatives. 
  • 5+ Years of leadership experience in human resources compliance 
  • Experience managing total rewards within a union environment  
  • In-depth knowledge of employment law and regulations 
  • Excellent client service skills, able to influence, build relationships, and trust at all levels. 
  • Strategic leader with exceptional verbal and written presentation skills, including ability to prepare materials for audiences at all levels of the organization. 
  • Proven ability to manage communication strategies that reinforce compensation and benefits messages. 
  • Strong leadership, people management and mentoring skills. 
  • Inclusive leadership style that engages, develops, and motivates their team to drive results, yet is not afraid to get into the detail. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to analyze data, understand trends and develop recommendations for action based on the analysis. 
  • Strong business acumen and strategic thinker and leader. 
  • Excellent relationship builder & influencer. 
  • Demonstrated ability and courage to handle change. 
  • Ability to build relationships and engender trust from peers and colleagues.

  • Strong analytical capability and problem-solving skills; demonstrated ability to consider implications of complex problems and solutions, priority management and taking necessary actions for resolution. 
  • Excellent listening and communication skills, including verbal, written, and presentation.

We offer competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. For this position, the salary is $179,000 to $198,000. Internal equity considerations will be reviewed before making a final offer.

 

Our offices are open and we are operating in a hybrid model. We offer NRDCers flexibility, we ask them to come into the office and spend meaningful time there in collaboration with their colleagues.  We call this purposeful presence.
