Overview

NRDC is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our people helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act and many of the implementing regulations. Today, our team of more than 700 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy advocates, communications experts, and others work across the United States and the globe from our offices in Beijing; Chicago; New Delhi; New York; San Francisco; Santa Monica; and Washington, D.C. 

 

POSITION SUMMARY  

The E2 Senior Manager, Media and Strategic Communications is responsible for developing and executing E2’s media and communications strategy. This role will lead coordination of our staff, members and partners to build a unified, nonpartisan business voice for climate and clean energy policies at the federal and state levels and develop and execute effective strategies to deliver our message in social media, traditional media, film and audio. 

   

Reporting directly to E2’s Executive Director and collaborating closely with E2’s Director of Research and Publications, this role will secure media coverage of our widely cited reports and research, as well as help identify new ways to amplify these and other E2 resources. This role will also shape communications with donors and potential funders, identify opportunities to spread E2’s message and advance E2’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion; our support of young entrepreneurs and our nonpartisan approach. This is a limited term two year position.

Responsibilities

  • Under the guidance of the E2 Executive Director, create, coordinate and execute far-reaching strategic communications campaigns involving print, digital, social and other forms of media to make the business and economic case for climate and clean energy policies at the federal and state levels. 
  • Work closely with partners and allies to lead the design and deployment of collaborative communications campaigns designed to bring attention to the jobs, investments, economic growth and national security and global competitiveness benefits of shifting to a cleaner economy through policy action. 
  • Build and sustain strong relationships with business, political and environmental media, while also leveraging strong relationships with members, partners, allies and policymakers. 
  • Work closely with E2’s business members and other powerful messengers such as farmers, military veterans and others to develop and amplify their stories of how clean energy and climate policies are benefiting their industries, companies and communities. 
  • Develop metrics-based digital and social media campaigns; design and manage video storytelling projects and E2-led social influencer campaigns. 
  • Work with E2 staff on press releases, report releases and earned and paid media placements in Washington and in their states and regions. 
  • Write press releases, opinion pieces, social media content and other communications materials. 
  • Manage communications work around major E2 events and programs. 

Qualifications

Minimum Education & Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or a related field. 
  • Minimum 4-7 years of experience in journalism, advocacy, business and/or policy communications. 
  • And/or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Excellent writing skills with a background in journalism. 
  • Ability and demeanor to collaborate closely with partners, staff and members. 
  • Deep proficiency in social media strategy and tactics. 
  • Experience developing and managing strategic, multi-faceted communications campaigns. 
  • Experience leading collaborative communications efforts with internal and external partner groups. 
  • Experience working with businesses and businesspeople. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of clean energy and climate policy and how government works.  
  • Collaborative spirit and desire to work with teammates.  
  • Passion for the environment, climate action and making the world a better place. 
  • Ability to strategize and execute communications and business messengers that appeal to both Republicans and Democrats. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build consensus among diverse stakeholders and lead cross-functional teams.  
  • Strong organizational and project management skills. 
  • Proven experience managing priorities and working effectively across multiple internal stakeholders.  
  • Ability to travel to NRDC U.S. based offices, approximately 10-15% annually

We offer competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. Internal equity will be reviewed and considered to determine a final offer. For this position, the salary range is $90,000 to $115,000 

 

NRDC operates under a hybrid work model. Employees are required to come to the office 8 days per month.
